Dennis Martire Enhances Worker Wages in Maryland

Historically, unions were used to improve the working conditions and wages of workers. Unions were significantly implemented and popular during the 20th century. Men and women joined union companies to better secure their rights and their dollars during harsh work environments. But unions are still essential today, including in the fight for better wages. Dennis Martire, vice president and regional manager of the mid-Atlantic region of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), has taken up this fight from his leadership role.

In Montgomery County in Maryland, Dennis Martire worked tireless to pass a prevailing wage law that would ensure fair wages for working families. This same wage law, and others like it, also allow taxpayers to receive more return on their public investments. Many falsely believe that wage laws, thus better paying jobs, drive up community costs, but research conducted by LIUNA and Martire show that this is not the case. Rather, increased and protected wages simply facilitate the work being accomplished, but in a safer and faster manner.
